2016 Bergen County USTA Eastern Leagues

Thank you for your interest in USTA Eastern. There are many USTA Bergen County leagues to choose from. Carefully read the information below and submit the requested information via email in its entirety to be put on the list for a team(s). Leagues play at various times of the year, so please be advised that your request to play may be received during a period of inactivity, or when the leagues are already in session. Also be aware that you might be requesting to play in a league that is presently full.

Many players play in more than one league. If you're eligible you can play in more than one league or flight within a league as long as there is space for you on a team. When the leagues start we will try to find you a team with an opening. We are always in need of captains, which is a good way to play as much as you want, and sometimes is the only option for getting on a team.

Below is a listing of the leagues, and below the listing is a more detailed description:

Adult Leagues are for men and women 18 yeards of age and older, with championship layers, culminating in a National Championship.

18 & Over League: NTRP levels are 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5. May - August. Plays at night during the week.

40 & Over League: (New as of 2013) NTRP levels are 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5. May - August. Plays at night during the week.

Team match format for the avove leagues is two singles matches and three doubles matches.

55 & Over League: (New as of 2013) NTRP levels are 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, and 9.0*. (see below) May - August. Plays at night during the week.

Team match format for 55& Over league is three doubles matches.

Mixed Doubles Leagues are for men and women 18 years of age or older, with championship layers culminating in a National Championship. Team match format is three doubles matches. NTRP levels are 2.5, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0 and 10.0*. January - May. Plays on weekends.

* The total of the ratings of the two players of each doubles team may not exceed the NTRP level of the team (i.e., a 7.0 team could use a combination of two 3.5 players, a 4.0 partnered with a 3.0 player, or a 3.0 partnered with a 3.5 player).

Tri-Level Leagues: Plays in October/November through February, usually on Sundays. Sectionals are in February. This league will consist of both men's teams and women's teams that consist of three doubles courts - one court of 3.5 players, one court of 4.0 players, and one court of 4.5 players. We also have a flight of 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 players, but the winner will only win locally and will advance to an Eastern Championship only, usually played in May.

Unless otherwise specified, we play indoors at Bergen County clubs.

You have to be a USTA member to join a team. That takes about 5 minutes to do online, so we recommend you join after you get a commitment to be on a team (some teams may be filled). You do not have to play every week; that is something that you would discuss with your captain when they ask you for your availability.

If you don't know your rating, you can take a look at the USTA website (http://tennislink.usta.com/leagues/). Click on "NTRP Rating Help" for a tutorial. For a written description, go to http://dps.usta.com/usta_master/sitecore_usta/USTA/Document Assets/2008/02/14/doc_13_7372.pdf.

Just a hint: if you're between, say, a 3.5 and 4.0 level, it would be better to rate yourself a 3.5, since you can always play on a team higher than your rating, but you cannot play on a team lower than your rating. If you're unsure about your rating let us know, as we also will from time to time host an informal rating party. We cannot actually rate you, but we can guide you as to what you should rate yourself.
