In 2010, the Warren-Edison team from New Jersey finished second at the National Jr. Team Tennis Championships in Surprise, AZ, losing a close final match to a team from Puerto Rico, 24-27.
This year, with three of the same players, a new name (Basking Ridge), and a ton of hard work, the team soundly defeated a team from Hillsborough, NJ (55-34) to capture the National title.
"I am extremely proud of our entire team, who worked and trained hard to achieve this title, as well as the support and encouragement that all of the parents gave to each and every one of them," said the team’s coach, Mengchu Zhou. "I think that all of the players and parents will treasure this moment in their lives forever."
The journey back to Nationals began with regular team practices each weekend. Instead of just practicing with each other, the kids were asked to challenge themselves against bigger and stronger players.
"We ask them to play with adults to enrich their match skills and, more importantly, their mental strength," said Zhou.
During the season, the players spent time together off the court to get to know each other. And during matches, they displayed a team unity and strength that helped them take home the National Championship.
"Our entire team has a strong will to work hard and try our best -- even in times when we are ahead or behind," said Zhou. "Throughout this entire event, we all bonded with each other, and supported each other in both good and bad times, which ultimately led to our victory."
