Our New Jersey Region hosts a successful L3 doubles tournament at Inman

January 20, 2011 03:19 PM
On December 19, at the Inman Sports Club, an L3 doubles tournament took place. This tournament sponsored by the New Jersey Region was the first of its’ kind within the New Jersey Region and probably the Eastern Section. This was an unranked sanctioned L3 doubles tournament for BG 12’s and 14’s players which were mostly, but not limited to, players within the Jr. Intermediate Flight of the Central Jersey Jr. Team Tennis League.

Historically, doubles tournaments have been limited to players in high level sectional or national tournaments. Our thoughts in running this tournament was, since in Jr. Team Tennis these players play and enjoy doubles, why not take the doubles platform and move it into a more competitive environment at this skill level, also. Now we have a starting off point to bring doubles into a more competitive arena in L3, L2, and L1B tournaments. This can increase the appreciation for doubles as well as increase the number of juniors playing doubles which are great competition, fun and a great way to become a complete player.

The tournament was designed to be without registration fee to players registered in Jr. Team Tennis. We also hoped that it would get more players interested in playing Jr. Team Tennis. It did work, in that players who registered for the tournament without any prior knowledge of Jr. Team Tennis expressed great interest in playing Jr. Team Tennis once they heard about the program. Based on the turnout (31 teams) and response of the players and parents, it was a very successful event.

The juniors played exciting games hitting great shots and were all smiles. The manager of the Inman Sports Club, Danny P was very impressed with the players, and great comments from the observers. The Inman Sports Club has been a great supporter of New Jersey Jr. Team Tennis since the programs infancy some 20 years ago.

Ken Goldsmith was the tournament director and Lou Wiggs, the New Jersey Region president was a great supporter of the tournament and did his part in helping the tournament run smoothly.

Awards were given to all participants Congratulations to all the participants and winners for a successful event.
